"My Cat, Berry: Pondering the Questions of My Practice" by Kyra DeLoach

I would describe this week in CEP 812 as ‘a fun challenge.’ I have always watched and enjoyed Sketchnote-style videos like this video from Khan Academy. I had no idea what I was in for when it came to making one of my own… Do they record a voiceover? Do they talk as they go? What program do they use? Where do I start? Even more questions!

I researched different ways to make the video as most resources were recording video from above and paper or whiteboards used. I didn’t have a tripod, and I couldn’t figure out how to prop my phone above my desk. I changed my research towards the idea of using my iPad instead and found Dr. Jacob Goodins Video which helped me continue. I used my iPad, Apple Pencil, the app GoodNotes, VoiceRecorder app, iPad screen recording, and Movave Video Editor to edit my recording and voice-over.

I typed out my questions in GoodNotes so I could move them around and organize them in different ways digitally instead of the tiny pieces of paper they were originally on. It took a bit to get used to as I have never done something like this but overall it was a very efficient way to organize my ideas and have a record of my thought process.

I think that Sketchnote-style videos are something I could use with students and colleagues. At my institution, I am in charge of training resident assistants and desk assistants each semester. Powerpoints with policies and procedures can get kind of boring and repetitive to returners. After having done this, I can see how an interactive video like this may help get these concepts to students in a new way.

Have something you want to share? Try to make your own Sketchnote!
